<[TheBug]>
archetech: you looking for some additional ram or L5430s for that board
<[TheBug]>
I just took an X7DAL-3 out of commision and have some parts around
<[TheBug]>
er er sorry X7DCL-3
<[TheBug]>
but similar
<archetech_>
4 cores 6 GB ecc ram
<[TheBug]>
I have both some L5430s and I think E5640s or something like that around and a butt ton of ram
<archetech_>
got anothe 16G on a shelf for vm's
<archetech_>
yup id pay the shipping if its decent stuff
<[TheBug]>
well if your interested in parts let me know I may sell them for a reasonable price to get them off the shelf, not looking for anything crazy
<archetech_>
had 2 of these in a mirror server setup
<[TheBug]>
reason I decomissioned them
<[TheBug]>
was the board CMOS chip is on the way out, it won't save settings and resets to default which means 100% fans and no virtualization
<[TheBug]>
so all the chips / ram is just fine
<archetech_>
id be curious if theyd sell on fleabay atm
<[TheBug]>
honestly I tried to replace the board cause I entertained reusing the cpus and such but the one I could find the person sold me as-is told me it was working and when it arrived was a dead board
<archetech_>
fig I could get $30 with the baord and 8 gb ram/cpu
<[TheBug]>
so I kinda gave up
<archetech_>
yeah thats nasty id never do that to a buyer open a compliant
<archetech_>
complaint
<[TheBug]>
archetech_: if you interested just see pm
<archetech_>
think im gonna ebay this
<archetech_>
for kicks

<eth01>
Hi all
<eth01>
Would some VMs running on aarm64 be helpful ?
<IgorPec>
hi
<IgorPec>
eth01: you mean for extending the download network?
<eth01>
IgorPec: we have got on our hands on some aarm64 bare metal, which we will look to virtualise/container
<eth01>
cavium thunderx
<IgorPec>
ahaa. Lots of cpu power?
<eth01>
yeah, 96 cores type stuff
<IgorPec>
great. sadly for building we are currently tied to crosscompiling. we haven't done the migration to pure arm
<IgorPec>
but when we manage to do that, running some CI on such machines would be nice if possible
<IgorPec>
now we ran them on home servers ... with lots of cores
<eth01>
sure, well it won't be available for a while, but we have had a fair bit of interest from projects, so I'll let you know once we have something ready
<IgorPec>
ok. thanks!
<[TheBug]>
eth01: would love to see any stats you collect on the platform as you start to test it, would be interested in comparing performance vs x86
<[TheBug]>
also see the difference between having all those cores, probably really nice if you do fair share in a VM
<[TheBug]>
eth01: do you guys already have a planned use case your selves or just testing the platform your selves?

[TheBug]: we've had a number of requests but most of wht we have done to date has been around x86, but we have been offered some bare metal for the purposes of testing and development. We have a project to attempt virtualisation for 'micro instances#
<lanefu>
eth01: nice.. orginal thunderx? or thunderX2?
<eth01>
thunderx
<lanefu>
cool. yeah great usecase for micro instances. or anything where single threaded performance it's important
<lanefu>
single thread is probably comparable, but below rpi4
<eth01>
I have managed to break proxmox to run on arm64
<eth01>
not even their developers can do this :P
<lanefu>
haha
<lanefu>
nice
<lanefu>
I've got hashicorp nomad deploying ARM vms with qemu+kvm.. it sfun stuff
<lanefu>
and the cloud images from ubuntu and centos work nicely out of the box w/ cloud init
