<lanefu> Yeah probably vim3
<lanefu> I forgot why it's a bit faster than the n2, but i believe it is

<lanefu> aha faster memory
<lanefu> thanks fromport
<lanefu> but i do love the heatsink on the n2

<Tonymac_32> It's nice, the thing stays cool
<Tonymac_32> So, more soldering tonight, this time ribbon cable to character LCD's. Only 160 joints or so, but more tedious
<Tonymac_32> :P
<Tonymac_32> also involves hot glue
<lanefu> what are you putting together?
* lanefu learning about kernel frame buffer driver and "modedb"
<archetech> fbdrv is lowest last choice for X use
<lanefu> what are you using?
<archetech> what gpu?
<archetech> kms modesetting is lowest I use
<lanefu> Mali G52 MP4
<lanefu> but i dont care about 3d
<archetech> kms modesetting should be enough
<archetech> or bifrost
<lanefu> bifrost is an Xorg driver?
<lanefu> you have a sample xorg config?
<archetech> yes
<archetech> no I use lima
<lanefu> what driver are using with lima?
<archetech> manajro has a forum thread on arm for bifrost
<archetech> manjaro
<archetech> kern uses rockchip-drm and X uses lima
<archetech> mali-450
<lanefu> where does lima get its edid info for display?
<lanefu> can you show me that config?
<archetech> fr kern drv
<archetech> make sure bifrost is right driver
<archetech> google
<lanefu> ive got a mali 450 board too
<archetech> G52 is quite better
<lanefu> all im trying to do is get 2560x1440@60hz resolution
<archetech> ive got that on my rock64 manjaro kde
<lanefu> can you show me your x config for that
<archetech> boards not up atm
<archetech> doing lfs
<Tonymac_32> lanefu day-job handheld equipment I designed
<Tonymac_32> so the only things you are allowed to know is it has a lot of JST connectors, and a display. :P
<lanefu> homelab has new meaning
<lanefu> LOL
<Tonymac_32> well, our building is still on lockdown more or less, and there is a rumor that my basement is better equipped anyway...
<Tonymac_32> I picked up a NanoVNA V2, it arrived today, curious to see if it works
<lanefu> archetech: so problem is Xorg is only driving whatever resolutions are being returned by the framebuffer kernel drv.... and FB driver doesnt seem to support any reesolutions not in modedb
<archetech> so what board
<lanefu> le potato, orange pi4, odroid n2
<archetech> those all do that res not sure what the issue is
<Tonymac_32> on paper they do. the potato will if plugged into the monitor on boot, but won't dynamically
<archetech> got all of X installed?
<Tonymac_32> I assume the N2 is similar but mine is headl;ess
<lanefu> lol yes
<lanefu> fb will detect and do full 4k@30hz on n2
<archetech> paste your x.0.log
<lanefu> xrandr sees no other reesolution
<lanefu> if i override fb resoltion with `video=` paramer i can geet it to do other resolutions.. ex; 1080p then X will abide
<lanefu> but since 2560x1440 isnt defined in the kerne's modedb it doesnt work
<archetech> shouldnt have to touch the kernel line
<lanefu> "shouldn't"
<archetech> heh
<lanefu> i've tried forcefeeding edid bin
<lanefu> which it picks up
<lanefu> but xrandr doesn't see the port connector as whats indetified with the FB
<archetech> sound like a kernel config prob
<lanefu> yeah its missing code
<archetech> try manjaro
<lanefu> is your console 2560x1440
* archetech runs
<archetech> yes
<lanefu> is that the max resolution of your display?
<archetech> yes qhd
<archetech> try manjaro seriously then use those configs for armbian
<lanefu> well
<lanefu> no wonder yours works then
<lanefu> thats the max resolution
<archetech> whats your max 4k?
<archetech> then 2k should work
<lanefu> yeah 3840 × 2160
<ArmbianTwitter> @orangepixunlong (OrangePi): @Automatid @OPi_Community @Poddingue @cnxsoft @armbian it's available now, pls try again! thanks for your feedback! (17s ago)

<nekomancer[m]> software instead of hardware
<Tonymac_32> I concentrated on magnetism and semiconductors, and studied wave theory (including acoustics/photonics) to keep my mind occupied
<Tonymac_32> I found being bored is lethal to my ability to function
<Tonymac_32> while a full time student I also sold car parts full time, because knowing why hillbilly vehicles are broken is somehow therapeutic, and I needed money

<Tonymac_32> hahahaha viel Glueck
<archetech> no manjaro eh
<archetech> updating arch arm atm
<Tonymac_32> isn't that every day?
<archetech> well its rolling so
* Tonymac_32 used arch for several years

<Tonymac_32> Hi Werner
<Werner> Hey Tony
<Tonymac_32> @archetech yeah, the drivers for Midgard are really doing well now too, I was playing tuxcart/etc on my Tinker board with Armbian
<Werner> Does it have issues with hardware accelerated desktop?
<Werner> Because Panfrost is still quite buggy...
<Tonymac_32> for some reason on the 3288 I didn't see any issues with desktop, now I wasn't accelerating the desktop itself
<Tonymac_32> it wasn't like a couple other boards where everything broke if the acceleration was even available
<Werner> As for example Panfrost has issues when firing up the DE to build the wallpaper in once piece. It needs a moment to sort out fragments which are usually in the bottom right corner of the screen. Probably because there is some "dimming" effect that is hardware accelerated.
<Werner> Also there are lags when putting a simple load to it like moving windows with shadows around
<Werner> Tuxcart is playable but has very low fps
<Werner> s/fps/fps in some situations
<ArmbianHelper> Werner meant to say: Tuxcart is playable but has very low fps in some situations
<Tonymac_32> it's playable at low FPS without acceleration on the big core stuff
<Tonymac_32> so I wonder
<Tonymac_32> well, maybe it isn't, I don't play tuxcart, it might block
<Tonymac_32> I had some other stuff running at low FPS trying to figure out what was going on, but it's been months
<Tonymac_32> I think it was 5.4 (?), I was able to set it up for full playable game
<Werner> Well since it has these teething problems I assume it won't run smoother on other devices. Just talking about the T720 with Panfrost
<Werner> Never tried DE on H3 with T-450. Would not do quite well with 512MB memory anyways
<Tonymac_32> haha
<Tonymac_32> that sounds so ludicrous when I went to school with a 512 MB PC that was awesome at the time...
<Werner> True
<Tonymac_32> Sometimes I have to wonder what the actual benefit is
<Werner> of what?
<Tonymac_32> besides the obvious (that PC used 100 Watts for a single core HT)
<Tonymac_32> I thinka curve of available computer resources to productivity/capability gain would be pretty stark
<Werner> The power consumption is indeed a hugh factor. The price as well. You get quite some power for very low price in acquisition as well as within runtime.
<Werner> Even using an older laptop as homeserver draws a multiple times the current a sbcs needs.
<Tonymac_32> Right, however, a 512 MB SBC should be functionally usable
<Tonymac_32> web goes without saying is just insanely bloated (My browser is using 4 GB on this machine)
<archetech_arm> Vendor: lima (0x13b5)
<archetech_arm> Device: Mali450 (0xffffffff)
<archetech_arm> Version: 20.1.3
