<fizikz> Tonymac_32: measurements in this video suggest the 12V 2A (24W) power supply is ok for the HC2 + HDD https://youtu.be/0COp48Cy-2M?t=674

<Tonymac32>
the problem I had is that adding Wifi made the HDD fail because there wasn't enough power for both
<Tonymac32>
I'm pretty sure this is a port design problem, not a supply issue, but really need to examine it more closely
<HerculeP>
some wifi usb dongles can draw upt to 250 mA!; others (like Edimax) just 70 mA
<HerculeP>
why just use a powered usb hub?
<HerculeP>
why not*
<c0rnelius>
kinda silly using wifi for a NAS isn't it?
<PPA>
You might want to provide files or stream videos/music to mobile devices (laptop, tablet, smartphone)
<c0rnelius>
Tonymac32: has the USB3 issues been sorted on RK3328 yet or is it still kinda iffy? I was looking at the new NanoPi NEO3 from friendlyarm.
<lanefu>
yeah neo3 has a lot going for it
<c0rnelius>
Absolutely, which is why my NAS is connected to my modem and has samba, minidlna and avahi installed.
<lanefu>
i wonder where RK3328 performance lays compared to H5 and H6
<c0rnelius>
I thought so... looks pretty sweet.
<c0rnelius>
on paper its a better SoC, but... I find it to be a bit unstable.
<c0rnelius>
I have the NEO2 Plus and really like that lil board.
<Tonymac32>
wait, why does the NEO3 have a lot going for it vs *all the other ones*
<c0rnelius>
USB3
<c0rnelius>
thats it! ha
<Tonymac32>
I haven't really had any USB3 issues on my RK3328 boards in recent history. No stress testing though

I like it cuz 2 gigs of ram, usb 3.0, Gigabit ethernet and NO HDMI
<c0rnelius>
and its cheap. $25 for the 2 gigger.
<c0rnelius>
the lil white case and heatsink is also a nice touch. I wish they added an eMMC option though.
<c0rnelius>
My question is, how fast can the ethernet actually pull? I know my renegade could never pull a Gig and was/is unstable in that regard.

<lanefu>
how were you measuring network i/o?
Hokedli has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<c0rnelius>
i didn't math it out or anything. just with hit and miss speedtest-cli. but even with that I would see huge jumps up and down pulling from the same location.
<lanefu>
yeah speedtest is a super crap shoot
<c0rnelius>
yeah
<lanefu>
iperf3 is best way to see if raw throughput can be achieved
<c0rnelius>
I'm sure the kernel makes a difference as well. when doing lil test with the neo2 on 5.7.y it can't pull down more than 90. if I use 5.8-rcx it pulls 420s.
<c0rnelius>
i'll run some iperf3 tests and see what I find
