<Tonymac32> boot.ini makes me sad
<Tonymac32> but the kernel didn't want to start when I tried mainline u-boot last time, maybe I missed replacing boot.ini with a real script
<Tonymac32> oof, so I wasn't sure which ubuntu I had on my WSL just because I never actually use it, I want to say the "unsupported os" error message is pretty abrasive: "It seems you ignore documentation and run an unsupported build system: xenial"
<Tonymac32> and I'm not known for being particularly friendly.
<Tonymac32> Let's get the 20.04, shall we
<Tonymac32> I started working on 3 different things during the release cycle and made a big mess I had to clean up, I want to try splitting the work a bit differently
<ArmbianHelper> AR-427 [Task] "OdroidN2 boot.ini incorrect video options" reported by Lane Jennison at 2020-09-12. Status: To Do
<lanefu> So you wanna move amlogic to newer uboot?
<Tonymac32> right. I quite frankly believe we should downright refuse "boot.ini" dependent boards
<Tonymac32> It garbles the entire thing
<lanefu> Yeah it's made it hard
<lanefu> Definitely probably shouldn't earn supported status
<Tonymac32> I compiled mainline uboot for N2 with absolutely no problem, but got stuck on the kernel hanging and had more pressing issues, like the other Meson64's :D
<lanefu> Ha okay I guess I should remove my N2 from desktop duty again lol
<Tonymac32> nah, wait until I actually do something
<Tonymac32> lol
<lanefu> Okay that's fair
<Tonymac32> and the problem now is, all the people using it with Armbian have pre-historic vendor laziness polluting their systems. :P
<lanefu> Yeah upgrades are a huge pain point
<Tonymac32> and for good reason, you don't want to smoke someone's system if they modified their boot environment
archetech has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<Tonymac32> The answer is probably a more complex package repo, but that would be a massive PITA, unless we're already doing it and I missed it in my wanderings
<Tonymac32> so repo per release
<lanefu> Well there's some sense in that
<Tonymac32> So the current release keeps their u-boot (although now you have no updates ever again unless we're in posession of free time)
<lanefu> But where do we draw the line with producing kernel updates
<Tonymac32> kernel I think is no concern
<lanefu> Ohhhh okay
<Tonymac32> generally*
<lanefu> That sounds managable
<Tonymac32> with broken uboots it is an issue
<Tonymac32> well, the other option is far cleaner, and a bit meaner: We don't support crap u-boot boards
<Tonymac32> no matter who made it
<Tonymac32> Or we flag it "CSC" or "WIP" until it meets a minimum requirement of handling a proper script/etc
<Tonymac32> and everyone has to understand if they build it it can break later
<Tonymac32> side note: I still maintain WIP/CSC should not have images on the Armbian site
<Tonymac32> unless we make a "playground" download page that says "you agree to accept the fact that this image might already be broken, and could break at any time in the future. Installs may not be able to be upgraded to the supported version if that support becomes available" before they can download
<Tonymac32> speaking of such messes, I need to review whether or not UMS is fixed in mainline u-boot for RK3288 so we can move u-boot into the current year
s_frit has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
s_frit has joined #armbian
<lanefu> Yeah some additional distancing from WIP/CSC images would definitely be good
_whitelogger has joined #armbian
<Tonymac32> hmmm, for Tinker, the newer u-boots killed off the RK3288 specific config file and merged it into the generic rockchip one. the biggest hiccup here will be getting UMS to trigger when the board sees it's attached as a device. The ASUS patches won't work now
<ArmbianTwitter> @armbian (armbian): @jerry_hopper @tomshardware You can make your own JerryPi distribution with #armbian tools https://t.co/nfxumpN5h1 to understand how little work you need to invest for re-branding and how this procedure contribute little to nothing to the #OSS (9s ago)
<Tonymac32> Well, I'm only getting about 30 kbps from the u-boot git at the moment, guess I'll go to bed and see if it's done tomorrow night. :P
<IgorPec> yeah
<IgorPec> good night! :)
<Tonymac32> you seeing something like that?
<IgorPec> yesterday
<IgorPec> haven't pull anything today yet
<Tonymac32> I speed tested my internet to make sure it wasn't my ISP haha
<Tonymac32> It took forever to set up a second build machine too, the compilers were crawling on DL
<IgorPec> i was getting timeouts on git, but now it seems alright
<Tonymac32> also, Igor, don't start picking fights with those DietPi guys again XD
<IgorPec> yeah, i tried to be neutral ;)
<IgorPec> brb, must take kids to the school
<Tonymac32> alright, have a good day Igor, I'm signing off and letting the dial-up download u-boot :)

<ArmbianTwitter> @ryjelsum (laboraparty animal): if a good desktop OS and some sort of compatibility layer for x86 makes its way to ARM i will gladly make the jump because i am a touch obsessed with power efficient hardware. we're already halfway there really because ARMbian exists so a half decent linux distro exists on ARM (4s ago)

<IgorPec> like dell xps / mac ?
<lanefu> not sure what to compare it to.. havent touched a modern PC laptop in a long time
<lanefu> keyboard is defintely good
<lanefu> and screen is good
<lanefu> speaker is shit, no surprise no complaint
<IgorPec> i would need to get one - just to compare with xps

<lanefu> oooo
<Tonymac32> I'll give a go at it once I decide whether to give up or not on Tinker update. IgorPec, if HDMI out works on the Tinker in new u-boot, maybe we just add the 2-3 second boot delay so the user can put it in UMS mode the normal way?
<Tonymac32> "automagic" is cool, but high maintenance
<Tonymac32> And I can't remember why MiQi is on the old u-boot either, I'll look
