<ArmbianTwitter> @armbian (armbian): @mizanyx Overall better #armbian Linux support - significantly helps if you create Synaptic index at build time. Also stronger #allwinner hardware - Banana M2 zero has faster 4 core CPU & with #armbian #FOSS boot loader. Its expected. (17s ago)

<lanefu> hey eth01 watcha lookin for?

<neonlightning> on my xu4 using ubuntu minimal i was able to connect my webcam device(a psp streaming as a usb webcam) just fine. but on my rp64 and n2 using armbian dmesg just says "Entity type for entity Input 1 was not initialized!"
<neonlightning> psvita sorry not psp
<neonlightning> and it shows up in lsusb just fine aswell.
<lanefu> neonlightning: try putting a powered USB hub in between
<lanefu> N2 has some USB power deficiencies
<neonlightning> i'm using the rockpro64 right now
<neonlightning> my end goal is to setup a vitadock. so the vita plugged into the rp64 or n2 and connected vita bluetooth to a a2dp_source on the sbc and have the alsa hdmi as the output. on the xu4 i got most of these things working in ubuntu 20 minimal(i hadn't thought to try armbian at the time) aside from the cpu usage on one core was maxed and the rest were doing nothing. i couldn't overclock because the
<neonlightning> patches weren't for 20. and i couldn't figure out how to get my bluetooth to pair with the vita in the right mode. the xu4 would connect to my phone just fine though and play music to my tv.
<ArmbianTwitter> @lanefu (Lane Jennison): @sahajsarup We added a mirror option and regional round robin to @armbian build tools. 🤠 (28s ago)
<neonlightning> and i can't seem to find any of the power adapters for my usb hubs
<neonlightning> and i've tried both the usb3 and usb2 ports. and on the xu4 was using usb2.0 through an unpowered hub(the ogst case)
<lanefu> Gotcha. Yeah just need to eliminate the usb power stuff as potential issue before digging much deeper
<neonlightning> it's just weird because powerful usb ports are one of the selling points of this thing. it even has a usbc display port on it. but also wouldn't we expect different results between the usb2 and 3 ports then?
<neonlightning> i've been struggling at this for 3 days now non stop lol. the xu4 is so close but it's just too weak to do it right(and i never did figure out the bt audio part)
<neonlightning> the only things i've read about the problem are that it's because it's too new of a kernel but noone has said what versions worked still. and that wouldn't explain why the ubuntu 20 would work
<neonlightning> well i'ma try a different version of ubuntu on the rp64. if that doesn't work i might end up back on this because it's the closest i've gotten to getting working video out of mpv or mplayer other than using fbdev

<lanefu> Rk3399 will have better luck with acceleration
<lanefu> Also you may want to try these x11 settings and use the (kernel)modesetting driver
<neonlightning> trying to avoid using x
<lanefu> Oh
<lanefu> Well.. i believe in you
<[TheBug]> neonlightning: don't confuse 'powerful USB ports' with 'powered USB ports' though, another great example is ESPRESSOBin, if you don't use a powered USB hub, nothing connects at super speed.
<[TheBug]> just because it is USB 3.0 doesn't mean the board spec for power is correct or perfect
<[TheBug]> and a lot of devices if they don't detect power needed will drop to USB 2.0 or just not work.
* [TheBug] remembers learning this the hard way once

<ajcc> Hi! I have an old TS-7250 ARM9 board which has all the source code available, but as far as I can tell there's no device tree for it. So I'm trying to get an idea of how long it would take to write a device tree? I've only written overlays before and I'm not sure if it would be a suitable project to finish in 5 weeks of full time work for an undergraduate project class in computer engineering at university.
<ajcc> Not a thesis or final project.
<TRS-80> Hi ajcc
<TRS-80> Sounds feasible to me, but I am only low to medium level wizard at best and have never done it myself. I just read a lot on forums, so take that for what it's worth. ;)
<TRS-80> quite feasible, in fact, given that you have 5 weeks full time...
<TRS-80> someone should chime in shortly to correct me if I am far off base however, so you might want to hang out a bit
<ajcc> TRS-80: Thanks :) It does sound feasible, but it's hard to know.
<TRS-80> I can appreciate that
<ajcc> I'm mostly worried that getting the first step working will be amazingly hard. The tree starts at the cpu so the memory and all the buses have to be described before you can even probe the serial port to get some debug output. I think the bootloader just leaves an address in the second register that points to the device tree, and that's its work done.
<TRS-80> That's the thing. I am only speculating. You could be exactly right (which is why I don't want to mislead you). But I can not tell you "for sure" one way or the other.
<ajcc> TRS-80: That's fine, I still appreciate you :)
<TRS-80> Now, you may get lucky if Igor or someone happen to pop in here and see discussion and give you some answer. But understand only some part of community hang out on IRC. So if you don't get an answer in whatever time you have to hang around, I would highly recommend making a forum post about it, where you are "casting a wider net" so to speak, and much more likely to get a /correct/ answer. ;)
<TRS-80> Cheers, mate
<IgorPec> i was never doing this and its very distant (5+ years) from current perspective.
<IgorPec> ajcc: i can point you to some community efforts doing this for translating propriatery configurations to device tree https://github.com/mripard/sunxi-babelfish
<IgorPec> but this is allwinner specifics
<TRS-80> well, there you go :)
<TRS-80> If you like additional opinions (as I can appreciate it's important decision for you) maybe still make a forum post...
<ajcc> IgorPec: interesting, thank you! :) I also saw there was over 4000 search matches for device tree on the forum, so there might be something there too
<TRS-80> that too
<IgorPec> for device tree itself you can find lots of data nowadays, but if you want to bring up some old code to this might be some effort
<IgorPec> also there is some history behind device tree development, perhaps you can find some at linaro / https://www.devicetree.org/
* TRS-80 needs to go run some errands
<TRS-80> stipa, hold down the fort! :)
TRS-80 has quit [Quit: WeeChat 2.9]
<ajcc> Interesting, I was kinda naively hoping I would get away with using the old bootloader by appending the device tree blob to the kernel image. But I should ceck if it can unpack the image first.
