hi all, I hope it's ok if I ask here about GPIO pins on the Tinker Board?
<jschwart>
I bought a neat power+reset button off aliexpress for it and I connected the buttons to the power & maskrom pins
<jschwart>
this allows switching in a fancy way & powering on the tinker board

but there are also power led+, power led- and a hdd led+&- connectors
ornxka_ has joined #armbian
<jschwart>
I imagine I could connect those to some GPIO pins to let them be on when the board is on or maybe control them, but I have no clue which pins are suitable for that
<jschwart>
I read multiple schematics, but I don't understand the terminology there
<ubone>
how to set static ip? i don't have a router, just a simple switch
loredin has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<jschwart>
ubone: there should be a link-local address by default
<ubone>
what does this mean
<jschwart>
you don't have to assign an address
<jschwart>
there is already one
<ubone>
how do i find it
<jschwart>
type: ip a
<jschwart>
or fully: ip addr
<ubone>
i don't have access to the device
<ubone>
no display
<jschwart>
ah, so you don't know its address?
<ubone>
how would i
<jschwart>
you need to at least be able to address it to even set anything up on it
<ubone>
ok
<jschwart>
or have a display attached to read out the info
<ubone>
not an option
<jschwart>
how would you expect it to work?
loredin has joined #armbian
<ubone>
by writng the address infos on the sd card before putting it in the pi
<jschwart>
ah I see, what you could do is put a script in place that puts the info in a file
<jschwart>
then boot once and shut down again, take out the SD card and look at the file
<ubone>
is a script really needed? isn't it just network/interfaces
<jschwart>
the link-local address is based on the MAC address
<jschwart>
do you know the MAC address?
<ubone>
of the pi? no
<jschwart>
it seems there are different ways to derive the link-local address
<jschwart>
I'd recommend putting this in /etc/rc.local: /usr/bin/ip addr > /root/ip_addr
<jschwart>
then boot the system once, shut it down, take out the card, look at /root/ip_addr
<jschwart>
there will be an address starting with fe80
<jschwart>
you can reach that from another system, just suffix the address with % and then the interface name from which you connect
<jschwart>
for example: ssh fe80::dead:beef:dead:beef%eth0
<jschwart>
replace fd80::dead:beef:dead:beef with the address you find in the log file and replace eth0 with the name of the interface on the system from which you connect
<[TheBug]>
or use DHCP and check your router for the IP it gets when it boots
<[TheBug]>
or hook up a USB TTL adapter to UART port
<[TheBug]>
or just set a static IP for the interface in teh config
<ubone>
no log was made
<ubone>
wait

<ubone>
should the redirect be before or after the exit 0
<jschwart>
before
<jschwart>
exit 0 will terminate the script execution
<ubone>
maybe i didn't wait long enough

I am off to bed here, ubone good luck!
<jschwart>
you can also look at the suggestion of [TheBug], but you'd need to configure a bit more where-as link-local addresses are probably the easiest to use for your use case

Hokedli has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<ubone>
i might have ipv6 disabled on my laptop
<[TheBug]>
ubone: what are you doing
<[TheBug]>
that isn't even a real IP
<[TheBug]>
of course your can't connect to it
<[TheBug]>
link local is like 127.0.0.1
<[TheBug]>
its a local interface only
archetech has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<[TheBug]>
also if that was an ip it would be e80::2314:a522:ec31:7bac
<[TheBug]>
you wouldn't include the interface at the end
<[TheBug]>
but really your solution is mount the sdcard in your computer, modify /etc/network/interfaces to specify a static IP
<[TheBug]>
then umount card, boot in board
<[TheBug]>
should come up on ip etc
<ubone>
that's what i asked for but was told to do this
<ubone>
can i add only "address" to that file or is there more that's needed? my laptop's eth ip is 10.0.0.1/8
<[TheBug]>
ubone: why don't we start over a bit here so I can give you good instructions -- can you please tell me what board you are working on and what you are trying to accomplish, I will try to give you a good complete answer
