<ubone> <[TheBug]> orange pi one
<ubone> im trying to connect it to my laptop with eth
<ubone> both are plugged to a dumb switch
<ubone> i did 'ip a add 10.0.0.1/8' on the laptop so i assume i had to add 'address=10.0.0.2'
<ubone> on the pi, at least
<Xogium> /8 ! That's a bit too extreme
<Xogium> /32 for a single host ;)
<Xogium> but what you trying to do ?
<Xogium> I missed the backlogs

<[TheBug]> ubone: easiest would be to run a dhcp server on your other client as Armbian from a defaul install with attempt to use DHCP, second option is google how to update /etc/network/interface to match the network you need and then mount the sdcard and make static network settings in that file -- if you have for some reason chosen a desktop image and NOT the server image, you may need to actually
<[TheBug]> use Network Manager to configure the interface which is a whole other thing
* Xogium waves at [TheBug]
<[TheBug]> After that it would be good just to have some display on the board, either USB TTL UART cable or HDMI screen where you can easily login to the board and set this manuallyu
<[TheBug]> on the command line
<[TheBug]> Xogium: how goes
<Xogium> [TheBug]: seen worse and better, really. We're still not allowed to go in our new place which is really starting to be meh
<Xogium> beyond stressful already
<[TheBug]> :( Sorry to hear that, that would be stressful
<ubone> i have the server img afaik
<IgorPec> server or desktop = no diff
<IgorPec> good morning
<ubone> display is not an option
<Xogium> [TheBug]: yeah, no kidding. The insurence are also fscking things up, and so's the bank. Argh
<Xogium> IgorPec: morning
<[TheBug]> IgorPec: does it utilize /etc/network/interfaces in newest versions then or do you have to configure network manager?
<IgorPec> yes
<[TheBug]> IgorPec: he is trying to statically assign an IP to it
<IgorPec> both should work
<[TheBug]> I think the article I linked is appropriate
<[TheBug]> if it will use /etc/newtork/interfaces
<IgorPec> yes, else network manager
<[TheBug]> ubone: see that link I posted above
<ubone> if laptop's eth is 10.0.0.1/32 what gateway and netmask to put in there
<[TheBug]> you don't need a gateway if only 2 board on the network segment and its not connected to the internet
<[TheBug]> just assign one side 10.0.0.1 and other 10.0.0.2
<[TheBug]> 255.255.255.0
<ubone> would 5V 1A be enough to power opi one and a usb hdd
<IgorPec> nope
<HerculeP> probably not
<[TheBug]> For H3 you should have 5v2A as base, it may boot on 1A but you try to use cpu any your gonna undervolt
<[TheBug]> and for sure not with a hdd
<[TheBug]> if your gonna connect a hd you should have a good 5v3A supply is my opinion
<Xogium> I'd try 5v 3a
<[TheBug]> ^^ ding ding
<Xogium> ;)
<HerculeP> hhd can draw much current when spinning up
<Xogium> now, if the hdd has its own power source it is different
<Xogium> like some big 3.5 inch from wd have their own psu
<HerculeP> sure
<ubone> it's 2.5
<Xogium> still can draw quite a bit of power
<HerculeP> if the hdd is clicking all the time you need a powered hub maybe
<Xogium> yea saw that once
<Xogium> thought the hdd was dead
<HerculeP> usb ports often are limited to 500mA

<HerculeP> dont use cheap "chargers" with thin cables, look for voltage drops either at the usb output or the GPIO 5v pin(s)
<HerculeP> 70% of mine are not suitable as PSU
<HerculeP> even if labeled @ 2.5A
<Xogium> indeed. A lot of charger can't maintain their voltage or amp proper, they keep dropping
<ubone> i don't really have options to pick from, it's all made in china

<[TheBug]> yeah the interface is likely not named eth0
<[TheBug]> actually
<[TheBug]> it should be
<[TheBug]> lets see
<[TheBug]> are you seeing a link on the ethernet port / on the switch you are using for the interface?
<[TheBug]> there should be physical LED to indicate it is linked

<stipa> jschwart: i guess you could connect a diode with resistor in series directly to pin with power on GPIO, it'll tell you when board has power, when it's on you could do some scripting to turn on some pin to logic "1" which could give you an indication that board booted into the linux
<stipa> again, you connect another diode to that scripted pin
<stipa> whn you put it to logic one the power flows through that pin and it's enought to light a diode
<ubone> how to remove that tip about sudo on login

<stipa> there are instructions how to do it
<IgorPec> cp- armbian uses debian or ubutu package base. if you need more recent packages follow their guides how to do that
<IgorPec> we only provide the expensive part
<IgorPec> hirsute variant packs most recent weechat
<cp-> uhmmm ok
<cp-> there is not armhf package AFAIK in hirsute
<IgorPec> why not?
<IgorPec> you can actually build hirsute image with our tools, but its experimental level
<cp-> uhmm it is choosing the default packate
<cp-> 1.9.1
<IgorPec> if you want to use this on focal, things are not that simple

<f476_> im installed speedtest cli by ookla on orange pi zero without any problem from https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli . but on orange pi one plus get error after add sources, log https://termbin.com/7y36
<stipa> lanefu: additional proper antenna needed and it's fine
<lanefu> f476_: using wifi? orangepi zero wifi is really really bad.
<f476_> ethernet
<f476_> this problem on orange pi one plus
<f476_> with ethernet
<f476_> ping ok
<f476_> and orange pi zero onle ethernet
<f476_> work without error and get this sources
<lanefu> f476_: that's not an ethernet problem.. thats literally what it says in the error message
<lanefu> you did an update with a mirror thats out of sync
<lanefu> just need ot `apt clean` and probably wait and try again
<f476_> ok, now i try it
<f476_> with apt clean same error
<f476_> hm
<lanefu> just wait.. install with python `pip3 install speedtest-cli`
<f476_> @lanefu: sorry but test on python speedtest-cli dont give me right result. in work company used sppedtest by ookla
<stipa> try dsl reports
<lanefu> or iperf3 to your own servers
<lanefu> stipa: i think he's wanting a cli tool
<lanefu> s/he's/they are/
<ArmbianHelper> lanefu meant to say: stipa: i think they are wanting a cli tool
<f476_> but, why speedtest now work on orange pi zero with same install, but dont work on orange pi one plus
<stipa> there's an older version of iperf3 that doesn0t work as it should
<stipa> it's circulating around
<stipa> maybe you have that one on your opi
<f476_> in zero and one plus same system Armbian 21.02.3 Buster with Linux 5.10.21-sunxi
<stipa> check the version of iperf3 on both
<stipa> and compare
<stipa> 'iperf3 -v'
<f476_> in zero and one plus same version iperf 3.6 (cJSON 1.5.2)
<f476_> for install i add ookla deb sources on one plus, but dont get after apt update
<f476_> on pi zero get this deb sources
<lanefu> iperf and iperf3 are different
<stipa> i have this one:
<stipa> root@orangepilite2:~# iperf3 -v
<stipa> iperf 3.7 (cJSON 1.5.2)
<lanefu> f476_: orange pi zero.. 32bit.. orange pi one plus.. 64bit.. and also.. their repo is outof sync.. you just need to wait
<f476_> oh

<stipa> can ethernet nic work in 100m and switch to 1000m only when it senses that it needs to go faster?
<stipa> i guess that my usb ethernet nic overheats beacause it0s in the 1000m mode all the time but it doesn't get hot when it's in 100m mode
<stipa> kind of a guess
<stipa> i'll try to put it into 100m mode to see if the heat will go away first...

<kayterina> hello. I have an orange pi i96 for which I found an image from armbian forum, nmtui-connect reports "wifi cannot be activated". The official images get stuck during reboot. I don't see an option for armian to built an image for this board. Is it a dead end?
archetech has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<stipa> kayterina: if it's not on the supported list then it could be a dead end https://www.armbian.com/download/?device_support=Supported

<stipa> i have no idea why it overheats doing nothing

<kayterina> haha,so the company sells a board that will never reboot? Perhaps it is a feature then!

<stipa> people sell many kinds of stuff nowadays
<kayterina> I search for something in the rpi0 form factor that will have the pins (spi,i2c), an external antenna and sound and at least as capable of cpu as the rpi0. the rockpi S seems like a good fit?
<kayterina> and nano pi duo2 seems to support ov5640 camera
<stipa> there's some bananna stuff in that form factor i guess
<stipa> but i guess support is not so great
<stipa> maybe
<stipa> what about spressif stuff
<stipa> espressif*
<stipa> some even habe usb
<stipa> have*
<stipa> wifi...
<stipa> bluetooth
<stipa> good linux support
<stipa> regarding dev tools
<stipa> i saw someone ported linux to it
<stipa> but it's slow, but there is RTOS for it
<stipa> there are few espressif chips
<stipa> it has great connectivity so if you need linux to do some things you can communicate with espressif chip but you'll need an extra linux machine
<stipa> but, you can code pretty much anything for that boards

<jschwart> [TheBug]: what you wrote ubone is incorrect, link-local IP addresses always start with fe80 and you to append the interface from which you connect, the loopback address is ::1, you made him go back to IPv4 now which adds little value (only config overhead)
